Detalle del aviso:Smithsonian Tropical Research InstituteOffice of Human ResourcesAnnouncement No.16August 12, 2025NOTICE OF OPENINGApplications for “Research Technician I” will be accepted effective immediately.Location of position: Gamboa, Colon, Panama.Type of position: By taskThe Research Technician I will provide support through their knowledge in fieldwork, amphibian husbandry, invertebrate production for amphibian feed, studbook record keeping, volunteer management, and outreach skills.You will have some of the following responsibilities:
  • Perform and follow proper rearing activities and protocols for invertebrate production, used as food for the ex situ amphibian populations.
  • Carry out appropriate husbandry activities and protocols for the ex situ amphibian populations housed at the facilities.
  • Breed individuals to increase amphibian populations to desired stable levels for future reintroductions.
  • Maintain records related to amphibian husbandry, population management, and a studbook of breeding pairs.
  • Ensure the availability of materials and supplies necessary for maintaining amphibians and invertebrates.
  • Support the coordination of a volunteer and education program, involving local and international volunteers, interns, and students.
  • Participate in rescue expeditions in Panama aimed at incorporating new individuals into the ex situ amphibian populations.
  • Assist with the setup of amphibian rescue pods and exhibits.
  • Conduct outreach activities related to amphibian conservation.
  • Participate in the reintroduction of individuals into the wild.
  • Perform other duties inherent to the position as assigned by the supervisor.
To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in vertebrate, invertebrate, or conservation biology.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with a diverse range of individuals in a multicultural environment, with proficiency in both English and Spanish.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications, including MS Office, Windows, and other programs relevant to the role.
  • Good physical and respiratory condition required.
