Detalle del aviso:Smithsonian Tropical Research InstituteOffice of Human ResourcesAnnouncement No.17August 18, 2025NOTICE OF OPENINGApplications for “Scientific Coordinator” will be accepted effective immediately.Opening Date: August 18, 2025Closing Date: September 1, 2025Location of position: Naos, Panama City Panama, with additional responsibilities in Galeta (Colon) and Coibita (Veraguas).Type of position: Indefinite - Local PayrollWho May Apply: Panamanian citizen or non-nationals with valid work permit.The Scientific Coordinator oversees the seamless operation of STRI's facilities in accordance with institutional policies, ensuring that indoor and outdoor communal areas, laboratories, offices, and equipment remain fully functional, safe, and well-maintained. This role also drives facility upgrades and safety initiatives while acting as the primary liaison to coordinate services between researchers and STRI departments.You will have some of the following responsibilities:
  • Act as chair of the Facility Committee (FC) as part of his/her responsibility for all of what happens in STRI facilities - science, education, engagement, outreach, conservation, and all the supporting services.
  • Serves as the facility member of the Research Project Evaluation and Approval Committee to evaluate research projects. Ensures that any new research proposal does not cause or has conflicts with other projects that are underway or developed or that are not over-manipulated by the interest of several projects in this population.
  • Act as an advisor for those research projects without a scientific staff sponsoring.
  • Responsible for the management and daily operations of the facilities for science under supervision including general use areas and scientific equipment.
  • Establishes goals and objectives for the staff under supervision, in conformity with the guidelines defined by STRI. • Prepares performance plans, conducts mid-year review, and evaluates staff under supervision. • Ensure STRI's compliance with permit regulations in the Republic of Panama by scientific, administrative and visitor personnel, in responsibility, such as, but not limited to collecting, export, import permits, among others.
  • Provide the required support and orientation for the researcher's projects executions in terms of infrastructure, equipment, and logistical support for the success of the research project. • Participate in the development of projects within the facilities under supervision. This relates to projected revitalization plans for infrastructure, coordination of the maintenance of general use areas for scientific projects, implementation of standards policies and procedures, and the development of new procedures or recommendations for policy changes to increase effectiveness in his/her area of competence.
  • Ensures that property, laboratory space, equipment supplies and other consumables, essential to the normal operation of the laboratories, are available and stocked, properly maintained, and adequately assigned to the scientific community and that they are used according to STRI policies and regulations. This includes routine and emergency maintenance of instruments and equipment in accordance with guidelines and in discussions with manufacturers.
To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:
  • The incumbent must hold a master's degree or at least 5 years of experience in biological sciences, natural resource management, or a related discipline appropriate to the position or have a technical equivalent.
  • Must have scientific background and experience. For aquatic facilities must have experience in marine or freshwater sciences. Knowledge of handling 4x4 vehicles and small boats (
  • Desirable: Must possess a valid boat operator license issued by the Autoridad del Canal de Panama (ACP) and Autoridad Maritima de Panama (AMP).
  • Ability to communicate with and relate to a wide range of people in both English and Spanish in a multicultural environment.
  • General knowledge of management of research projects and equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic administrative concepts.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications (MS Office, Windows, Access, and other related to his/her duties).
  • The incumbent must have the capacity to work effectively under pressure and in a rapidly evolving environment.
